Holiday Gift Guide For Art-Lovers

Natalie Dark Art Holiday Gift Guide For Art Lovers 9 Gifts Art Lovers Actually Want.png

Let me be upfront: this is basically my Christmas List & there’s NO ART SUPPLIES on it!

After reading lots of art-lover gift guides I realized there is NOT A SINGLE ONE that has anything I am interested in. Sure, art supplies are great, and I’m sure someone out there wants an adult coloring book, but I read gift guides to get new & unique gift ideas (& art supplies is neither of those things!). Also, it frustrated me a bit that all these art-lover gift guides were pretty much artist gift guides. But not all art-lovers are artists, so what do we get them?! (I see you admirers & collectors!)

So, here we are. I made my own gift guide with 9 gift ideas & a ton of examples for each idea to help you get creative, thoughtful gifts for your art-lover this year!

Shout out to Santa & my husband…I’ve made it easy for both of you this year…hook your girl up!

ART BOOKS

Not how-to books. Not coloring books. But REAL art books.

I’m such a big fan of art books as gifts, especially because they play great double duty as coffee table books & can usually fit even the strictest of budgets without looking like a cheap gift! It’s like a gift with a safety net! Even if the person never reads it, a pretty book is always a great decorative accessory! (Pro Tip: Pair with a yummy candle for an extra luxurious touch!)

Finally! Give this to every woman you know, and every man. ($15.06)

MUSEUM TICKETS

One of my favorite places to visit is a museum (or anywhere that I can see art!). I think they are so so so underrated by Americans. There are constantly new exhibitions on display, events, and restaurants to visit. Even if the art-lover you are giving a gift to has been to every museum in town, there is no way for them to have been to an exhibit or event that hasn’t happened yet!

If there aren’t any good museums, art fairs, or galleries locally, check out what is going on somewhere nearby. You can make a day of taking a road trip to a nearby city, or if you want to really go big, make it a cool way to tell your art-lover that you are taking a trip somewhere!

Here’s a few examples of where I am going with this:

If you live near NYC or are planning a trip here soon, this jewellery exhibit looks like it is going to be amazing! Entry to the exhibit is included in the general admission ticket which is $25 for out-of-state visitors, while in-state visitors can choose what to pay (as well as try-state students)!

Who wants to grab a bite at a waterfront restaurant in a world class museum? That would be ME. The chef at Verde in the Perez Art Museum Miami has been known to create artist inspired dishes. So at the Perez Art Museum you really can see your art & eat it too! The meal pictured above is a Basquiat inspired dish Chef Kaytlin Dangaran created for a Basquiat exhibit back in 2016. Oh, did I mention they do brunch & happy hours?

In the Chicago area? Well you have no shortage of amazing museums, and if you are like me, then you are always looking for a hidden gem! So head on over the Driehaus Museum, because even if the Tiffany glass isn’t enough to make you want to go, then the world class art collection will, or the architecture, or the furnishings. It’s basically got it all, and at $20 a ticket, you really can’t beat it!

January 23-27, 2019 is the LA Art Show & I can’t ignore the fact that art fairs should be included with museums on this list! They are such a great way to discover emerging artists & maybe even end up with some art to take home with you! Tickets to the LA Art Fair are $30 for one day general admission, but pro-tip, look up some of the galleries exhibiting at the fair & reach out to them, because they usually have vouchers they give out so you can get your ticket for free!

FASHIONABLE ART

Fashion is art. Art is fashion. Because no, I am NOT talking about a screen printed Starry Night t-shirt, or Andy Warhol banana socks. I am talking about the beautiful, unique art of clothes making. We are so quick to forget that something functional has to be designed by a human, and that human is an artist. So here are a few of my favorite pieces that are being made by artists right now. Read their back stories, learn about the artist, about their process. Then tell your art-lover all about it when you give them that gorgeous piece of fashionable art!

Lingua Franca sweaters. 100% cashmere. 100% hand stitched statements. 100% a gift that goes beyond what you see. Sure, they come in at $380, which is a bit on the expensive side, even for cashmere. But hear me out. This is art that makes a difference, not just a statement. Their art is being used to support important causes, because when you buy one of the 100% cashmere, hand embroidered in NYC sweaters, you are also donating $100 to the charity of your choice. For example, this sweater not only makes a statement every time you wear it, but it also means you actually donated $100 to PAVE (Promoting Awareness Victim Empowerment). PAVE empowers survivors of sexual assault to thrive after trauma and galvanizes communities to end sexual violence. Go to their site & check out all the different ways you can make a difference in a tangible way through a high quality, stylish statement piece AND a significant donation to the charity of your choice! (MY. KIND. OF. ART.)

Ok, so maybe $380 just isn’t in the budget. Like at all. But don’t fret, because Lingua Franca partnered with the Whitney Museum to create a more budget friendly offer! Sure, it isn’t 100% cashmere, but can we talk about how yummy & cozy the sweater still looks?! This collab sweatshirt is much more affordable at $125 AND 100% of the proceeds go to the Whitney Museum. So you are still getting both a statement piece & a donation! There’s multiple versions of this sweatshirt available & it has actually already sold out & been restocked! So get on it now before they are gone again!

Ok, but also, let’s get real. $125 is still not exactly cheap. At all. But I REALLY like the idea of giving clothing that makes a statement & supports a cause. So here is my fix, go to Etsy & find a shirt (or get a custom one printed), like this one selling for just $14.36! Then make a separate donation for the amount of your choice in the name of the art-lover you are giving the gift to! This way you are also supporting a small business & creative!! Ok, I’ll stop now, but I won’t apologize for going on about it, because I really love this idea!

This scarf is part of a limited edition collection (only 6!) that comes packaged in a box that is signed by the NYC based artist, Carol Bove, who designed these textiles exclusively for The Whitney Museum. Check out the story behind the design, all I’m going to give away is that there’s magic involved! ($250)

Ok, there isn’t much of a back story on this one, but how cute is it?! I had to include it! $28 for long sleeve, and $21.60 for the short sleeve.

ART INSPIRED JEWELRY & ACCESSORIES

One of my personal favorite ways to wear my art! I have LOTS of favorites in this section, so let’s just jump right into it!

Y’all, how fun are these pearls?! Yup, those are real pearls & real black diamonds. Classy and fun don’t have to be mutually exclusive! And let’s be honest, art-lovers have lots of feelings, so these are perfect for us. ($499)

So if I left you craving art for jewelry, but not craving that $500 price point, then you should check out these one-of-a-kind pieces by Elaine Burge! Her latest collection is made of actual materials from her studio (like these tassel earrings made from a paint rag! Or necklaces made from an easel!). How cool is that?! And at $90, it is muchhhh more accessible!

I am such a big fan of a statement necklace with a big beautiful crystal hanging off it, especially on those days when I feel like just having crystals on my office or studio desk isn’t cutting it, and I need to straight up wear those suckers (might as well look fabulous doing it!)!! Allegra Fanjul is the jewelry designer (*artist*) behind this necklace & if you are into statement pieces, then go check out the rest of her collection, because I’m obsessed with all of it & her blog that shows you just how to style them! Speaking of statement pieces, how about transforming a classic like the LV Neverfull bag into a statement with a custom painting?! If I am speaking your language, then check out what Kris of KCA Design in Dallas can do! ($375 for illustration, bag not included)

Last, but certainly not least, Emma Ballou is the Long Island, NY artist pictured here wearing one of her paintings turned into a scarf. This is such a gorgeous piece of art that is perfect year round (yes, even during the summer, because how pretty would this scarf be tied to a beach bag or worn as a turban?!)! Her recent release of scarves COMPLETELY SOLD OUT, but you are in luck, because Emma is restocking in time for the holidays! So click on the image & sign up to be notified when the scarves are back in stock so you can be sure to snag one! ($65)

ART INSPIRED HOME GOODS

If you couldn’t tell, functional art is some of my favorite art! How much more amazing is it to get a handmade, signed, one-of-a-kind vase, than something that everyone can just pick up at Ikea? 1000% more amazing & if you ask me, I’d just rather have a story to go along with the pieces in my home…so here are some that I would love to have!

Picture it: Every time your art-lover arranges a cheese platter their guests oooh & ahhh over this beautiful, handmade, porcelain & gold fiddle leaf fig platter! Your art-lover then gets to tell their guests all about the North Carolina based artist behind the handmade porcelain platter, Lindsay Emery, and how she took her inspiration from the centuries old traditional of cabbage and lettuce ware to create a modern version based on the most ubiquitous-to-our-moment leaf, the Fiddle Leaf Fig! The platter is luxury at its finest. Hand shaped from dense porcelain for an ideal serving heft, with a serving surface that is glazed with a translucent, high-gloss ivory white glaze & finished with celebratory gold splatters! The best part will be when you show your art-lover the underside, which is signed by Lindsay Emery herself and sanded to a smooth finish! ($116)

This is a handmade porcelain deer antler with gold tips by Courtney Hamill of Honeycomb Studio. The white, porcelain body has been covered by a hand-mixed, clear glaze for a more polished and high-end finish. The metallic tip has been hand-glazed in gold to add a touch of subtle elegance. This antler has been left hollow and light weight. This sculptural horn allows you to bring the decorative, architectural element of a deer antler into your home without the taxidermy “ick factor”. These antlers would look beautiful as objets d’art that add style to any coffee table or bookshelf. ($120)

These globes are designed by Kayla Weber Nord for Anthropologie & they are basically the cutest thing ever! And probably the most perfect gift for any travel and art lover in your life! I can just picture it beautifully perched on a mantel or atop a stack of books on their desk. And if you are looking for an original globe from Kayla, well let’s cross our fingers that we are fast enough to snag one the next time she releases a glob collection (I have it on good authority (*Kayla*) that it is closer than you may think, so you should probably sign up for her email list if you haven’t already!). ($18-$38)

So I am going to kick off my ornaments sub-section of this gift guide with these precious ceramic tags by Provence Ceramicist, Annelaure Humblot! Because I can just picture the most adorable Christmas tree with soft white fairy lights & a few of these scattered about…and then when the tree is gone, I would transition them right into some other space in my apartment, because these need to be & can be showcased year round! ($16)

Kayla Weber Nord is clearly working on a million things right now & honestly I have no idea how she does it (Elves? Definitely elves). She has ornaments releasing November 28th at 9pm EST & if her previous releases are any indication, these are going to go FAST. So get on that email list & set a timer! You can expect jockey silks, Kentucky outlines, and abstract ornaments... and possibly a few other states!

Laurie Buck already sold out of these hand painted ornaments and she is coming back in REAL HOT next week with a restock! So if you are into these beautiful baubles, then head on over to Laurie Buck’s website & sign up for her email list to make sure you catch them as soon as she releases! ($28)

And finally, this gorgeous Studio Source ornament, which is the collaborative brainchild of ceramicist Lindsay Emery & oil painter Allie Dattilio. These ornaments are made of porcelain, handmade glazes, genuine 22k gold, and signed/dated by both Lindsay and Allie in a charcoal style pencil made for pottery--so it won't wipe off but has that sketched, charcoal look (how cool is that?!). How beautiful to have a piece of art made by two artists from such different disciplines?! The world needs more of that & I need to be part of it! So if you are as excited about these as I am, then sign up for The Studio Source’s email list to be notified about their release (which I believe will be on Black Friday, but always good to stay in the loop in case of any first dibs given to email list subscribers!).

FINE ART PRINTS

When you think prints, I want you to forget Target & TJ Maxx. Love them, but that’s not what I am talking about. I am talking prints directly from the artist themselves. Think prints you can’t get at a big box store. Think prints that none of your art-lovers friends will recognize. Maybe even think limited edition, hand signed & numbered, or even embellished prints! Yup, this can turn into a really fun & thoughtful gift really quickly! Here are a few of my favorite prints from a few of my favorite artists!

How gorgeous is this painting by Kentucky based artist Kayla Weber Nord?! If you liked the globes above, and like this piece too, then I think we have found a winner & you can stop scrolling, because this print is by the same artist! It is a high quality Giclee canvas print on gallery wrapped canvas. Ready to hang without framing. Kayla has lots of other options, including prints on paper, so go check out her website by clicking the image. ($90+)

This print by Victoria Bradley is a great option for the more minimalist/modern art-lover. The original painting was done with a single brush and a simple well of black paint! The image is printed on Somerset Velvet paper & you have the option of 3 sizes. While the print does not come matted or framed, I really love the way it is shown here & you could easily have that done before giving it to your art-lover! ($35+)

Allie Dattilio’s calming grey sky & gold leaf landscapes are now available as hand embellished giclee prints! Since her process is still pretty labor intensive, Allie’s prints are available once a month for purchase, so sign up to her email list to be notified when the print shop is open again so you can snag one of these beauties!!

Laurie Anne is a Phoenix based artist who paints the most gorgeous landscapes, botanicals, figures, and, oh, feathers! Her distinct style is evident in all of her pieces & couldn’t be a more perfect balance between abstract & realistic. Go check out her prints & try not to buy them all (or do, I’m sure she won’t mind!). Seriously, though, I could make a gallery wall just from Laurie Anne’s pieces! The 8x10 print is of watercolor feathers & is shipped unframed. ($35)

Dear Reader, I would like one of these Josh Young Design House pieces. Thanks! Ok, but seriously, this specific piece has been featured in O, Oprah Magazine & Josh has so many other versions for you to choose from. Like, c’mon! I need this. Not only does it perfectly balance old & new, but each piece is individually hand signed and hand painted using a mixed media technique featuring vibrant acrylic and oil paints on top of their high quality developed prints from their print studios in Brooklyn, New York. ($55)

ORIGINAL ART

And now, for the main event, because at the end of the day, an original is an original. And, in my only slightly biased opinion, there really is no substitute for original art. The brush strokes. The pencil marks. The intimate connection with another human. To me, there is nothing more luxurious than owning an original piece of artwork. No one else will EVER have it, only you. And if you are thinking, “Natalie, original art is just too much of an investment for me right now!”, well hear me out. Maybe you can’t afford to drop $50,000 for a gigantic oil painting by a well established artist, but listen, you don’t need to. I can guarantee there is an emerging artist out there doing things that speak directly to your soul & their price points are much more easy on the eyes (and wallet). Also, who knows, maybe one day that emerging artist you supported at the start of their career makes it BIG & you now have a seriously expensive piece of art on your hands all because you believed in them before anyone else did! How cool would that be?! Ok, so here are some of my favorite emerging artists out there who I think are making art worth investing in!

***BONUS, the first 7 pieces listed here are UNDER $500!

So I am kicking this off with one of my own pieces, because there is no shame in my game! And, I am super excited to share my newest collection of smaller works (which are not released yet, but hit me up if you’re interested)! These pieces are my way of focusing on the little things & allowing myself room to explore. The idea is to allow myself to depart from my typical still lifes & give both myself and the viewer space to really hone in on & enjoy a single subject in all its beautiful glory. As with all of my pieces, this is not only an original, but it will never be reproduced in any way (no prints!). It is made with 100% colored pencil on Arches 300lb 100% cotton paper, measures 10”x10”, & is shipped matted & ready to frame. ($480, tax included, complimentary shipping, payment plans available)

Every time I look at one of Ekaterina Popova’s pieces I feel like I am dreaming. While she usually paints interiors, I had to share this piece of hers, which I believe is from some time she spent in Greece. I can’t get enough of Kat’s intuitive, abstracted style! Every time I look at this piece I am faced with a new emotion, a new thought, a new appreciation for her work. “Skopelos, on the way to the sea” is an acrylic painting on paper, which is mounted on wood panel & ready to hang, measuring 9”x12”1.5”. ($300)

Blayne Macauley is an Atlanta based artist who creates stunning abstract, mixed media pieces! She uses symbols to create abstract paintings, which represent exact moments in her life. Kings are one of Blayne’s most iconic symbols & actually what drew me to her work. And you can snag this “Little King” online through Anne Irwin Fine Art! The piece is mixed media & measures 10”x8”x2”. ($350)

I have had my eye on this piece by Kayce Hughes, a Nashville based artist, for a hot minute & am very seriously contemplating gifting it to myself for Christmas. So naturally, I had to share it, because I like to torture myself! “Ancient Writings On Royal” is an original oil painting that has been created on canvas board, measures 9.5”x11.5”, and comes professionally framed in a wood and antique gold floater frame. ($448)

How stunning is this piece by Helen Davies? She is a UK based figurative artist & I love how her work celebrates our bodies while challenging us to think about how we censor them. This piece is made with pencil, graphite, and gold leaf, measures 9”x9”, displayed in a box frame. To purchase reach out to Helen directly via email (hdavies001@gmail.com ) or on Instagram ( @helendavies.art ). (£100)

Hiba Jameel creates some of the most beautiful, challenging, and significant pieces I have come across. She uses her art to speak her truth & stand up for what she believes in. What first drew me to Hiba’s work was seeing how a man that I am pretty sure she doesn’t know wrote her a nasty message on social media just for painting nude figures & then seeing how resilient she was in the face of it. You see, while Hiba currently lives in the US, she is originally from Baghdad, which means that even though we live in the same country she is constantly fighting for something I take for granted (like painting nudes without criticism). We take geography to mean so much more than it does, and we are so quick to forget that the person sitting next to you has not had your same experiences. Honestly, I could go on for days about her work, but you should really just go check it out & read about her work. I can’t do it justice! About this piece: “Through the Chaos,” acrylic on canvas, 48"x48” ($4000) To inquire about purchasing, email Hiba at hibajameel@yahoo.com or send her a message on Instagram ( @hibajartstudio ).

Meg Biram is a DC based artist & always working on some beautiful murals! Luckily, Meg also works on canvas & paper, so you can take her with you to every home you ever live in! This piece, “I’m Blushing” would make a beautiful statement at 36”x60”. ($1500)

Dark, moody, hopeful. These gold leaf, abstract landscapes by Allie Dattilio reflect whatever I am feeling in the moment. Sometimes it shows me the turmoil I am feeling, other times it talks to me about the hope of new things to come. I have it on good authority (AKA, the artist herself) that this next collection, which is being released in just a few days (so get on that email list!), will be game changing. Already obsessed with everything she is doing, so I can’t wait to see what she does next! About this piece: “A Little Closer,” oil and 24k gold leaf on premier gallery-wrapped canvas, 24" x 30" x 1.5" Signed, shipped wired and ready to hang, image wraps around all edges. ($860)

Have to end this section with a really unique piece (because have you seen another round painting or drawing on here?!)! I find it interesting that what I am drawn to is not necessarily aesthetically similar to what I create. This piece by Ekaterina Popova speaks to my soul. I find so much comfort in the familiarity of her messy bedrooms painted in these vibrant, dreamlike colors. It’s like she is translating that happy, comfortable feeling of being in your element (you know, that secret place no one else sees where you can just be yourself) through color and movement. About this piece: 30” diameter, oil on wood panel, 2018 ($1200) To inquire about purchasing, either email Kat (ekaterina.s.popova@gmail.com) or send her a message on Instagram ( @katerinaspopova ).

COMMISSIONS/GIFT CARDS

Maybe you want to get something a bit more personal, or something custom for your art lover. Maybe you want to let your art-lover in on the process! A gift card gives you flexibility. It can be the gift of a commission, or a contribution to that piece your art-lover has been eyeing! The best part is, this won’t come off as one of those gifts that says “I really didn’t try.” A gift card for a specific artist means you have put A LOT of thought into what your art-lover would like & allows them to be part of the process!

Lots of artists offer gift cards & can be purchased directly on the artist’s website! But even if you don’t see gift cards listed on the artist’s website, just ask! I’m sure you’ll be able to work something out that works for the two of you!

MEMBERSHIPS/SUBSCRIPTIONS

Museum memberships, art magazine subscriptions, art course subscriptions! These are all things that are often overlooked & would be wonderful gifts that your art-lover can use on a regular basis! Below I am linking a few memberships/subscriptions I think your art-lover would be over the moon to receive!

Allie Dattilio & Lindsay Emery are launching a new resource community for artists & makers who are selling their creations! From online courses to masterclasses and group coaching sessions, this will be the gift that keeps on giving! This will be offered as a monthly membership & is launching in the very near future, so head on over to the website by clicking the image above & join the waitlist to be the first to know when it does!

I would personally love a gift like this! An annual membership to a museum means you get so many perks throughout the year! For example, when you become a Friends of the Smithsonian member at the base price (usually $75, but currently on sale for $55!), you are sent 11 issues of their magazine, discounts at their store, an annual calendar, & more (not sure what that more is, but they say that there’s more on the website lol). You don’t need to be close to a museum to make a membership worthwhile, so look into a few to see if any of them seem like they would be interesting for your art-lover!
